Compensation & Benefits

Cahill offers associates highly competitive annual base salaries and bonuses. Each year, our associate compensation is reviewed to ensure it matches or exceeds that of other major New York City-based law firms.

For incoming lawyers, the firm will advance up to $7,500 of the first year's base salary in the spring before commencement of full-time employment. Advances are also available to judicial clerks joining the firm once the clerkship is completed.

Summer associates are compensated on a basis consistent with that of our full-time first year associates.

Sign-on Bonuses

The firm pays sign-on bonuses of $50,000 to judicial clerks and $25,000 to LL.M. (tax) graduates when they start at the firm.

The firm awards one year of credit to incoming associates who have concurrently obtained a J.D. and M.B.A.

Health Plans & Insurance Benefits

  • Firm-subsidized choice of medical plans for lawyers and eligible dependants, including spouse, same-sex domestic partner and/or children. Benefits include a prescription drug plan. Coverage begins the first day of employment.
  • Firm-subsidized choice of dental plans for lawyers and eligible dependants, including spouse, same-sex domestic partner and/or children. Coverage begins the first day of employment.
  • Flexible Healthcare Spending Account for allocation of up to $3,000 in pre-tax dollars to be applied against qualified healthcare expenses.
  • Group term life insurance at four times annual base salary, without cost.
  • Short-term Disability benefits up to 26 weeks at 100% of salary.
  • Group Long Term Disability insurance, without cost. Subject to approval by the insurance company, monthly benefits of 60% of salary are paid after 26 weeks' short-term disability have lapsed.
  • Optional Group Long-term Care Insurance is available and pays an additional monthly benefit if you become disabled after 90 consecutive days. Benefits are paid up to a maximum of 72 months.
  • Group Travel and Accident Insurance, without cost. Benefits of up to $825,000 are provided for accidental death or disability.
  • Free annual physical at a designated Manhattan facility.
  • Discounted health club membership with The New York Sports Clubs.

401(k) Plan & Other Benefits

  • Immediate enrollment option to participate in Cahill's 401(k) Plan. Our plan allows for participants to make elective deferrals to the plan as "Roth Contributions".
  • 4 weeks' paid vacation.
  • Pre-tax TransitCheks for MetroCards and commutation tickets (railroads, bus lines and ferries.)
  • American Express Corporate Card. The firm pays the annual fee, and associates are billed monthly.

Work / Life Balance

  • Flex time/alternative work schedule.
  • 12 weeks' Maternity Leave, or up to 26 weeks maternity-related disability. Additionally, women who return to the Firm after giving birth or adopting a child will be given the option to work at a reduced load for up to 12 weeks for proportionate pay to ensure a smooth transition back to work after maternity leave.
  • 4 weeks' Paternity Leave.
  • Employee assistance program for lawyers and their families for personal difficulties, including substance abuse, depression and financial problems.
  • Emergency child care from a trusted name in daycare, located nearby the office.
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is available to eligible lawyers employed by the firm for at least one year.


Moving Assistance & Related Benefits

  • Reimbursement of reasonable moving expenses.
  • The firm is a participant in Citibank’s private banking mortgage program, which provides employees with preferential treatment and certain benefits when applying for a mortgage.
  • Free legal representation on primary residence closings in New York.

  • Technology stipend that provides reimbursement for selected technology expenditures for home and office.
  • Reimbursement for bar review course fees and application fees for the New York State Bar. (Most associates are expected to have taken the Bar Exam prior to commencing work. Associates who take the Bar after commencing work are allowed ten days paid study leave, plus two days for the exam itself.)
