Floyd Abrams Appears before Senate Judiciary Committee in Campaign Finance Hearing

Date: 06/04/14

On Tuesday, June 3rd, Floyd Abrams appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee in a hearing on campaign finance addressing the proposed constitutional amendment to limit campaign spending by outside groups. In the hearing, which featured testimony by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Floyd testified in opposition of the proposed amendment, arguing that limiting campaign spending violates the First Amendment. The Committee also heard testimonials by North Carolina state Sen. Floyd McKissick, Jr., and American University professor Jamie Raskin.

In 2010, Cahill prevailed on behalf of Sen. McConnell in the landmark Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-to-4 decision that government may not ban political independent expenditures by groups such as corporations, associations, and labor unions in candidate elections.
