Edward O’Callaghan Quoted in Bloomberg Law on DOJ’s New Public Corruption Initiative

Edward O’Callaghan, partner, co-chair of the firm’s White Collar Defense & Investigations and chair of its Congressional Investigations practice, was quoted in Bloomberg Law’s recent article on Department of Justice enforcement efforts related to fraud involving public funds. The article examines the legal challenges associated with pursuing public officials whose alleged liability stems from inaction rather than direct participation in fraudulent conduct.

“The Supreme Court has narrowed criminal liability under the theft of honest services approach,” Ed said. “There are other corruption statutes that they can look at, but that’s going to be a challenge.”

Ed also discussed the legal and practical challenges of pursuing large-scale public fraud investigations involving state officials.
