Cahill Honored With Sanctuary For Families’ 2025 Above & Beyond Pro Bono Achievement Award
Date: 08/06/25
Cahill has been named a recipient of Sanctuary For Families’ 2025 Above & Beyond Pro Bono Achievement Award.
Following years of continual work, a Cahill pro bono team led by partner Joel Kurtzberg and including associates Joe Adams, Lisa Cole, Brigid O’Keefe, Chana Tauber, and Jessica Urgo will receive the Above & Beyond award from Sanctuary For Families in recognition of their representation of a woman seeking custody of her nephew after the sudden death of child’s mother and obtaining an order of protection against the child’s father, in addition to Cahill’s representation in a related Hague Convention case.
When Cahill joined the matter, the Hague court had already issued orders on two separate occasions requiring the child to go back to his father in Italy, despite crediting allegations of abuse. Cahill worked together with another law firm in the Hague case and prevailed in persuading the Hague judge to reverse her prior rulings and keep the child in New York while custody was being litigated because of the grave risk of harm to the child if he were returned to the father in Italy. Cahill also was successful in negotiating a settlement in a Family Court case that provided full legal and physical custody for our client, a 2-year order of protection, and supervised virtual visitation for the father.
The team will receive the award at a ceremony on October 21 at City Winery NYC.
