Cahill Team Named ‘Litigator of the Week’ Finalists for Victory Blocking California Deepfake Law

Cahill partner Joel Kurtzberg, senior counsel Floyd Abrams, and associate Jason Rozbruch have been named “Litigator of the Week” finalists by The American Lawyer.
The team was recognized for securing a victory on behalf of a major social media company in its challenge of California law AB 2655. The statute would have required social media platforms to remove posts reported as “deepfakes” of political candidates in the lead-up to elections. Earlier this month, U.S. District Senior Judge John Mendez ruled that the law was preempted by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and this week entered judgment barring the state from enforcing AB 2655 against the company.
