Alfonso Chan Quoted on the Future of Patent Litigation in the Western District of Texas

June 5, 2026

Cahill partner Alfonso Chan was quoted in Law360’s article, “Will WDTX Remain A Patent Fixture Without Albright?,” discussing whether the Western District of Texas will continue to be a leading venue for patent litigation following U.S. District Judge Alan Albright’s departure from the bench this summer.

Alfonso noted that the Western District’s rise as a patent litigation forum was already underway before Judge Albright’s tenure, stating, “It was already going in that direction. Judge Albright just helped catalyze it.” He further observed that Judge Albright “isn’t an aberration,” adding that he “was really carrying on a strong tradition within the Western District court judges of being quite expeditious in trying cases and moving things along.”

Discussing the district’s future, Alfonso said he is “cautiously optimistic” that its judges, including newly appointed judges, will maintain the court’s efficient pace. He also noted that Austin and the surrounding area remain highly relevant in technology-related cases, stating that the region is “enormously tied to high technology.”
